Southern Avenue SE Roadway Project: Phase 1 Redesign Improvements
(Washington, DC) — The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will host a virtual public meeting on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, to present the Redesign of Southern Avenue SE: Phase 1, which will provide upgrades to intersections and streets to improve safety and accessibility for all users of Southern Avenue SE between the intersection of South Capitol Street and Barnaby Road SE.
The total length of this segment of Southern Avenue SE is about 0.284 miles (1550 feet). Proposed safety improvements include sidewalk enhancements, roadway resurfacing, signage and pavement marking, bridge rehabilitation, channel fence replacement, pedestrian crossings, and enhanced traffic signal timing. The project will also include safer geometric reconfiguration of intersections between South Capitol Street and Barnaby Road SE to provide safer and more efficient mobility for all roadway users.
This public meeting will give residents and stakeholders an opportunity to learn more about the project and will kick off the 30-day public comment period. For more information about the project, please contact [email protected] or visit the project webpage at southernavesedc.com.

This design aligns with the District's Vision Zero initiative, focusing on safety improvements to create a more accessible, safer, and user-friendly environment for all users. Notable features contributing to this goal of efficient mobility include improved pedestrian infrastructure, new signals/signal timing, and Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs). The redesign follows the Environmental Documentation and Preliminary Engineering study from 2014, with a recent traffic study in 2023 supplementing the earlier findings. This segment of Southern Avenue SE was prioritized for safety improvements in the Mayor’s 2015 Vision Zero Action Plan. The final design of the Southern Avenue Phase 1 Project is now nearing completion.
