Dockless Vehicles in the District

Since September 2017, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has been exploring dockless vehicle options in the District of Columbia. The current demonstration period has been extended through August 2018.

Five private dockless companies have started operating in the District. The companies are Jump, Spin, Lime, Skip, and Bird.

  • Two companies operate bicycles only--Jump and Spin
  • Two operate electric scooters--Skip and Bird
  • One operates both--Lime introduced scooters into its bicycle fleet in March 2018 and now operates both types of vehicles

DDOT issued public-right-of-way occupancy permits as the mechanism of control to qualifying vendors in September 2017.
