District Department of Transportation

Electric Vehicle Initiatives

Sustainability is a top priority for the District, and the switch to electric vehicles complements many existing District sustainability goals and initiatives that look to electrification to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the District as the city seeks to be carbon neutral and climate resilient by 2050.

Transportation Electrification Roadmap

The Transportation Electrification Roadmap (TER) is the District’s encompassing plan regarding electrification of the transportation sector. The TER provides guidance for meeting the three overarching transportation goals of the Clean Energy DC Omnibus Act of 2018.

National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program

DDOT has developed a plan to ensure all District residents and visitors access Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program, under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), intends to establish a nationwide network of electric vehicle (EV) chargers that support access and reliability for all users. The District will receive $16.7 million dollars over five years for Direct Current (DC) Fast chargers to be installed along federally designated Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs).

Residential Electric Vehicle Charging Station Program

The goal of DDOT’s electric vehicle (EV) charging initiatives is to expand public space charging opportunities in the District to incentivize vehicle owners to switch to an electric vehicle. As a greater number of District drivers make the switch to an EV, DDOT looks to find solutions to meet the needs of current and future EV owners. The EV Charging Station Program creates a public space permit available to EV charging station vendors to install a charger at eligible curbside spaces in the District.
