Anacostia River Trail: Arboretum Bridge to Maryland Avenue Connector Project

Mayor Muriel Bowser and the District Department of Transportation are working to provide a transportation system that is safe, sustainable, and equitable. Part of this commitment is to create a connected network of multi-use trails across the city.

What is the Arboretum Bridge to Maryland Avenue Connector Trail?

The Arboretum Bridge to Maryland Avenue Connector Trail is a proposed 1.1– mile trail that will connect the Anacostia River Trail via the future Arboretum Bridge to Maryland Ave NE (in the area shown below).

The trail will ultimately connect to the new Arboretum Bridge, providing a seamless connection for Ward 5 residents to the Anacostia River Trail and a bicycle and pedestrian crossing point over the Anacostia River. Currently, to cross the river without this proposed connection, people in Ward 7 must travel from Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens either 1.5 miles south to Benning Road or 2.5 miles north to the pedestrian bridge at Bladensburg Waterfront Park. These distances make it difficult for residents of Eastland Gardens, Kenilworth, or Deanwood to walk or bike across the Anacostia River.

What is DDOT planning to do?

DDOT will conduct a feasibility study to identify critical issues to developing a paved trail connection in this area, including right-of-way, drainage, stormwater management, environmental concerns, and transportation network needs. The feasibility study will identify the best alignment for the proposed trail. A key component of the feasibility study will be stakeholder and public coordination.

When will the work be done?

DDOT plans to begin a feasibility study in Fall/Winter 2022. The feasibility study will take approximately 12 months.
