Buses in the District

Bus on DC street

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) provides a broad range of transit services for residents, workers, and visitors to efficiently and affordably move about the District. DC Circulator buses crisscross the city, K-12 students can get to school through the Kids Ride Free Program, and DDOT funds Metrorail and Metrobus service provided by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) in the District, coordinating to make service improvements for riders.

Bus Priority Program

DDOT is working to improve bus travel speeds and reliability across the District through bus priority projects.

Bus Shelter Program

DDOT is currently replacing all of the bus shelters in the District with new, modern shelters.

DC Circulator

The Circulator's distinct red buses are unlike any other public transit around town—with low floors, big windows, and multiple doors for easy on-and-off service.
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) operates Metrobus, the largest bus transit system in the District.

Kids Ride Free

The Kids Ride Free program allows students to ride for free on Metrobus, the DC Circulator, and Metrorail within the District to get to school and school-related activities.

Public Transit Service Requests for Schools

To ensure accessible and reliable public transportation for students, school officials can request that DDOT assess the feasibility of new public transit services.

Transportation for the Elderly and Persons with Disabilities Program

The federally funded program assists organizations that provide transportation for the elderly and persons with disabilities.
