Temporary Ramp and Lane Closures in the I-295 Corridor Scheduled for the Week of November 4

(Washington, DC)—The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will temporarily close lanes, Ramps and shoulders on the following roadways to perform construction activities along and near the I-295 / DC 295 corridor.

The following lanes, ramp, and shoulder closures will be in place daily from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm, Sunday, November 4, 2018, through Saturday, November 10, 2018, weather permitting:

  • I-295 northbound single left or right lane between Malcolm X Avenue, SE interchange and I-695 (Exit 5A)
  • I-295 southbound single left or right lane between 11th Street Bridge (Exit 5) and Malcolm X Avenue, SE Interchange
  • South Capitol Street, SE/SW single left or right lane between Firth Sterling Avenue, SE and N Street, SE
  • South Capitol Street, SE/SW two left lanes or right lanes between and N Street, SE and the Frederick Douglas Memorial Bridge
  • Suitland Parkway, SE single left or right lane between Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, SE and South Capitol Street, SE
  • Firth Sterling Avenue, SE single left or right lane between South Capitol Street, SE and Howard Road, SE
  • Howard Road, SE single left or right lane and sidewalk between Firth Sterling Avenue, SE and Suitland Parkway, SE
  • Potomac Avenue SE/SW single left or right lane between First Street, SE and Second Street, SW
  • P Street, SW single left or right lane between South Capitol Street, SW and Half Street, SW

The following lanes, ramp, and shoulder closures will be in place nightly from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am, Sunday, November 04, 2018, through Saturday, November 10, 2018, weather permitting:

  • I-295 northbound two left lanes or two right lanes between Malcolm X Avenue / JBAB (Exit 2) and I-695 (Exit 5A)
  • I-295 two southbound left lanes or right lane between 11th Street Bridge (Exit 5) and Malcolm X Avenue, SE Interchange
  • South Capitol Street, SE/SW single left or right lane between Firth Sterling Avenue, SE and N Street, SE and intermittent intersection closures at P Street, SW. - LCR
  • South Capitol Street, SE/SW two left lanes or right lanes between and N Street, SE and the Frederick Douglas Memorial Bridge
  • Suitland Parkway, SE two right lanes or two left lanes between Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, SE and South Capitol Street, SE
  • Firth Sterling Avenue, SE single left or right lane between South Capitol Street, SE and Howard Road, SE
  • Howard Road, SE single left or right lane and sidewalk between Firth Sterling Avenue, SE and Suitland Parkway, SE
  • Potomac Avenue SE/SW single left or right lane between First Street, SE and Second Street, SW
  • P Street, SW single left or right lane between South Capitol Street, SW and Half Street, SW
  • I-295 northbound off-ramp closure to eastbound Suitland Parkway, SE (Exit 3A). Signed detour will be in place for closure.
  • I-295 northbound on-ramp closure from eastbound Suitland Parkway, SE. Signed detour will be in place for closure.
  • I-295 northbound off-ramp closure to westbound Suitland Parkway, SE (Exit 3B). Signed detour will be in place for closure.
  • I-295 northbound on-ramp closure from northbound Firth Sterling Avenue, SE. Signed detour will be in place for closure.
  • I-295 southbound off-ramp closure to Howard Road, SE. Signed detour will be in place for closure.
  • I-295 southbound off-ramp closure to eastbound Suitland Parkway, SE (Exit 4A). Signed detour will be in place for closure.
  • I-295 southbound on-ramp closure from eastbound Suitland Parkway, SE. Signed detour will be in place for closure.

These closures are required for construction activities associated with the following DDOT projects:

South Capitol Street Corridor Project - Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge

The South Capitol Street Corridor Project calls for replacing the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge and transforming related sections of the urban freeway into a beautiful scenic boulevard that increases pedestrian and vehicular safety, improves multi-modal transportation options, increases community accessibility and supports economic development on both sides of the Anacostia River.

I-295 / Malcolm X Avenue SE Interchange Improvement Project

The multiple phases of this project include the reconstruction of the I-295 interchange with Malcolm X Avenue SE, including modified ramps and a new access roadway to the St. Elizabeth’s West Campus. The planned improvements will be made between Firth Sterling Avenue SE, on the north, and the South Capitol Street/Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue SE intersection to the south. The project will provide transportation improvements to serve the proposed Department of Homeland Security headquarters consolidation on the St. Elizabeth’s West Campus.

Rehabilitation of Anacostia Freeway Bridges over Nicholson St, SE

The District Department of Transportation project to rehabilitate the Anacostia Freeway bridges over Nicholson St, SE is part of DDOT’s ongoing commitment to safety. The rehabilitation project will focus on reconstruction of the bridge deck and adjoining ramps to address deteriorating structural elements, ensuring that each bridge remains a reliable part of our infrastructure.

Motorists are urged to use caution as they travel in these areas, to anticipate moderate delays, and to be mindful construction personnel.
