Temporary Lane and Shoulder Closures on I-395 3rd Street Tunnel/Air Rights

(Washington, D.C.) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will implement a series of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) improvements along the freeways within the District of Columbia. During this work DDOT will implement overnight lane and shoulder closures that will impact traffic along I-395.

The following single lane and shoulder closures will be in place during off-peak hours beginning 8:30 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. Monday, April 1, 2019 through Friday, May 31, 2019:

  • Left Lane Closures for Northbound and Southbound, I-395 3rd Street Tunnel and I-395 Air Rights Tunnel

ITS upgrades are an integral part of DDOT’s traffic management system that will help improve transportation safety, mitigate traffic congestion, and propel DDOT to employ advanced smart city technologies. This phase includes installation of fiber optic cable along I-395, I-695, I-295 and DC-295 (Anacostia Freeway).

Traffic controls will be in place to warn drivers approaching the areas. Motorists should anticipate moderate delays due to the lane closures. Motorists are urged to use caution as they travel in these areas, to anticipate moderate delays, and to be aware of construction personnel working in the area.

All construction related work and dates are subject to change, depending on weather, utility companies, material availability or other unforeseen conditions.
