FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Lane Closures and Traffic Shifts on I-295
Over Nicholson Street Begin Tonight
(Washington, DC) – As part of the District Department of Transportation (DDOT)’s rehabilitation of the Anacostia Freeway Bridges over Nichols St. SE., a number of lane closures and traffic shifts will be in place starting tonight.
To support the demolition and reconstruction of the mainline bridge over Nicholson St. SE, the right northbound lane of I-295 between exits 5C (to 11th St. SE) and 1B/1A (to Pennsylvania Ave.) will remain closed starting Thursday October 4 at 9:00 pm through the end of the year. Throughout the duration of the closure, a minimum of two lanes will remain open from the I-695 merge on I-295 to the Pennsylvania Ave exit (1B/1A).
Traffic will also be shifted one lane to the right on both I-295 northbound and I-295 southbound at the project site directly over Nicholson St. SE.
To facilitate the traffic shifts, additional lane closures will be necessary on I-295 northbound starting at 9:00 p.m. Friday October 5 through 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 6.
One lane of traffic will remain open on I-295 northbound on Saturday October 6 from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. On Sunday, October 7, traffic on I-295 southbound will be reduced to one lane from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Traffic controls will be in place to warn drivers approaching the areas and guide them through the construction area. Motorists should anticipate delays due to the lane closure. Drivers are advised to stay alert while traveling through these locations and to be observant of the work zone.
