(Washington, DC) – The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is scheduled to close the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge (South Capitol Street Bridge) for routine swing span testing on Sunday, April 23, 12:01 am to 3 am.

During normal opening and closing operations, the swing span is lowered and then turned, or “swung” in order to allow water traffic to pass. Crews test the swing span to ensure it operates properly and to make any needed repairs.

Motorists should plan an alternate route during this testing. The bridge will reopen as soon as the testing and related repairs are complete.

The mission of the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is to enhance the quality of life for District residents and visitors by ensuring that people, goods, and information move efficiently and safely with minimal adverse impact on residents and the environment.
