FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DDOT to Begin Safety Improvement Project on New Jersey Ave NW
(Washington, DC) – The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) issued a Notice to Proceed (NTP) for the Safety Improvements along New Jersey Avenue NW and a small segment of New York Avenue NW for May 13, 2019.
Temporary lane closures on New Jersey Avenue NW are expected to begin starting on or about May 27, 2019 during off-peak hours, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Work may also occur on Saturdays between 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
This project will convert New Jersey Avenue NW, between H Street NW to N Street NW, from its current one-way configuration to two-way operations. DDOT will also reconstruct New York Avenue NW between 1st Street NW to 4th Street NW to improve safety in the corridor.
During the construction work on New York Avenue NW, two lanes of traffic will be maintained in both directions at all times. At least one southbound lane of New Jersey Ave NW to New York Avenue NW will be maintained at all times during construction. A through lane on northbound New Jersey Avenue and one right turn lane onto New York Avenue NW will be maintained at all times.
Both New York Avenue and New Jersey Avenue may be subject to alternate traffic patterns during the asphalt resurfacing work. DDOT will notify the public in advance of any traffic shifts.
Signage, traffic drums and protective barriers will be used to guide motorists through the work zone area safely. Motorists should anticipate delays due to the shifting traffic patterns. Drivers are advised to stay alert while traveling to this location and to be observant of road work crews.
Once complete, the project will improve safety for all users of the roadway travelling through the corridor. Project highlights include the installation of high visibility crosswalks, bike lanes, ADA compliant infrastructure, and reconstructed sidewalks, among other highlights. The project is expected to be completed in approximately 20 months from the beginning of construction.
