The project area for Rehabilitation of Aspen Street NW includes a 0. 5-mile long section of Aspen Street NW from Georgia Avenue, NW to 16th Street, NW.
Purpose
The design for Rehabilitation of Aspen Street, NW is being facilitated for the redevelopment of Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The goal of this project is to provide an improved and sustainable transportation network, pedestrian /vehicular safety and accessibility, efficient travel options and street and sidewalk enhancement, etc. This design will support The Parks by improving traffic operations and providing traffic calming measures towards future Walter Reed development ensuring ADA compliance throughout the corridor. There are two historic buildings (31and 84) within new Aspen Street right of way that requires HPRB (Historic Preservation review board) approval for demolition. DMPED (Deputy Mayors Planning and Economic Development) is leading this application to HPRB.
Scope
The scope of work for rehabilitation of Aspen Street NW includes right of way widening from 55 feet to 75 feet and roadway widening from 34 feet to 38 feet; Construction of 10-foot wide multi-use trail on North side and improved sidewalk on South Side. It also includes street lights/traffic lights upgrades and a proposal for additional dedicated turning lanes at the intersection of Aspen Ave NW & 16th Street NW and Aspen Ave NW & Georgia Avenue NW. The scope is provided to improve drainage conditions, storm water management, green infrastructure and landscaping throughout the project.
The 30% design is complete and project is progressing towards the next phase of the design which it is 65% design.
