District Department of Transportation

DC StreetSafe: Oversized Vehicles

The District is a city of neighborhoods with many residential streets that were not built to handle the weight and damage caused by commercial vehicles. The enforcement of restricted truck and bus routes will reduce infrastructure damage and enhance quality of life in our neighborhoods. Oversize enforcement will be based on zones that include a number of blocks in the area of enforcement, with warning tickets issued for the first 30-days at the first location within a zone. Any subsequent location within the zone will issue live tickets.

Truck and bus drivers must stay on designated commercial motor vehicle routes and not drive on restricted streets. The oversize units use radar and lasers to detect whether a vehicle is too large to drive legally on a residential street.

Camera Locations

Oversize Commercial Vehicle camera units help identify trucks on restricted routes:

Camera may be moved to any location within the around surrounded by the yellow border.

To recommend a new automated traffic camera location or to learn more about Automated Traffic Enforcement, visit DC Department of Transportation's Traffic Safety Assessment.

Penalties

The fines for traffic violations captured by automated photo enforcement are exactly the same as the fines for violations issued by a police officer.  (The DC Municipal Regulations may be found at www.dcregs.org with the search words “Civil Fines for Motor Vehicle Moving Infractions.”

Pay Your Ticket

Ticket payments are processed by the DC Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).  For your convenience, DMV provides four payment options: online, by mail, in person, or by phone.
