
Any residents and contractors who wish to plant, prune, or remove a tree within the public right of way must first obtain permission from the District Department of Transportation and the Urban Forestry Administration. Private property trees larger than 44” in circumference are also protected and require a permit for removal.
- If you would like to plant, prune, or remove a tree within the public right of way, then you will need a Public Space Tree Removal Permit.
- If you would like to remove a tree in excess of 44” in circumference on any property in the District, then you will need a Special Tree Removal Permit.
