Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE Bus Priority Plan

In fall 2020, DDOT constructed pilot bus lanes along Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE as part of the District’s COVID-19 response and recovery. Now DDOT is studying the bus lanes, asking for feedback, and identifying other ways to improve transit and safety along the corridor from Good Hope Road SE to St. Elizabeths East Campus.

The first step in this project was to assess the outstanding needs in this corridor by performing an analysis of traffic and bus operations and reaching out to the public for feedback. In addition to canvassing the corridor, surveying business owners, and tabling at Anacostia Metro Station, we made the following presentation to ANC 8A in June 2021:

The next step was to take the information that was learned during our needs assessment and work across divisions at DDOT and with our colleagues at WMATA to develop solutions. Below is a presentation that was made at a virtual public meeting on September 14th, 2021 to provide details on alternatives that we are proposing for Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE:

Please provide comments, questions, and suggestions on these options by October 12th as DDOT is prepared to begin further design on improvements and implement them in 2023 or sooner.

This project will:

  • Evaluate the operations of the existing bus lanes
  • Identify ways to improve bus service, access to bus stops, and safety along the corridor
  • Seek input from the community
