Revitalization of Pennsylvania Avenue, SE For the Great Streets Initiative
Project Overview
Pennsylvania Avenue, SE, from the Sousa Bridge to Southern Avenue is a critical corridor of the District of Columbia. Pennsylvania Avenue is "America's Main Street" and one of the most noble and known streets in the world. The segment east of the river should be no less noble and attractive. DDOT's Great Streets Pennsylvania Avenue project has been a collaborative design process working with the community, the Office of Planning and the Office of Economic Development to improve mobility along the corridor for all modes (pedestrians, transit riders, and drivers) and create a positive public environment that supports local economic development and retail revival.
The corridor has been under study for a number of years by the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) to determine exactly what improvements were needed and to make sure that the project is coordinated with other planned transportation, infrastructure and utility improvements in the neighborhood.
The reconstruction of Pennsylvania Avenue will include additional landscaping, streetscape, the installation of a median, and numerous traffic calming measures, traffic signal upgrades and additional streetlights.
