Safety is the number one priority for DDOT, both for the traveling public and DDOT employees. Unfortunately, as 2005 draws to a close, the District has suffered 46 traffic fatalities so far this year, 15 of them pedestrians. The Benning Road/Minnesota Avenue intersection has the highest number of pedestrian crashes in the District. The measures to be announced on Wednesday reemphasize the District’s commitment to the "3 Es" of traffic safety: Engineering, Enforcement and Education. This includes engineering installation of more countdown signals than any other city in the country; sponsorship of traffic enforcement waves for pedestrians, motorists, and bicyclists; education programs for younger and adult pedestrians and bicyclists; and media outreach and education campaigns.
