Street Light Upgrade Launched By District Department of Transportation
(Washington, DC) The DC Department of Transportation has begun the conversion and upgrade of a number of series circuit street lights in the following District neighborhoods: Mt. Pleasant, Woodley Park, Rockwood Parkway and Constitution Ave, in Northwest; First Streets and Mt. Olivet Road, in Northeast; and C Street in Southwest. Series circuits are 50-year-old-plus electrical installations that plunge a whole street into darkness when one light fails because, like a string of old-fashioned Christmas tree lights, all the lights on the circuit go dark.
"DDOT is pleased to start replacing these circuits that are such a problem across the District, particularly in some of our residential neighborhoods," said Dan Tangherlini, Director of Transportation. "Upgrading our ancient street lights and underground circuits and bringing them up to modern reliability and equipment standards is one of DDOT's most important tasks and this series circuit replacement is a major step forward."
All existing street light poles and fixtures will be replaced; new manholes, conduits and cable built to feed the new lights; and disturbed roads and alleys resurfaced curb-to-curb. DDOT is working closely with neighborhood groups and individuals in the project areas to minimize disruptions from construction activity and traffic and parking restrictions.
Severn Cable is the contractor for the Mt. Pleasant replacement and MC Dean, Inc. is the contractor for the replacement in Woodley Park, 16th Street NW, Rockwood Parkway NW, Constitution Avenue NW, C Street SW, and Mt. Olivet Road and First Street NE.
