Public Invited to Discuss New Truck Policies
The District of Columbia Department of Transportation announces a public meeting to discuss the recommendations for new truck policies for the District:
What: Public discussion on Motor Carrier Management and Threat Assessment Draft Report
When: 7 pm, Wednesday, April 21, 2004
Where: 1st fl conference room 441 4th Street NW (former City Council Chamber)
The meeting will review recommendations and implementation strategies proposed in a report for DDOT by Volpe National Transportation Systems Center of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
The report proposes a three-tiered system of truck routes based on roadway characteristics, types of trucks that use the corridor, congestion and security. TR I is for corridors that are essential to freight movement in the District; TR II is for the roads that carry significant traffic but are less important for heavy truck traffic than TR I; and TR III is for the core high-security area as demarcated by National Capital Planning Commission
Specific recommendations include preferred truck routes, a metering system for use of the curb space and "peak pricing" and/or restricted rush hour loading and unloading.
The full draft is available under on the DDOT Web page, ddot.dc.gov, under Transportation Studies.
