Traffic Alert for Immediate Release February 4, 2003 Structural Deficiencies Force Restrictions on 31st Street Bridge Over C&O Canal in Georgetown Because of structural deficiencies, the roadway on the 31st Street bridge over the C&O Canal in Georgetown has been narrowed by installing concrete traffic barriers to prevent vehicles from driving or parking near the curb. An engineering inspection showed that the steel beams under the curb lanes have deteriorated. With these limits, the bridge is safe.
