Biography Gabe Klein Director
Mayor Adrian Fenty announced the appointment of Mr. Gabe Klein as the permanent DDOT Director in December 2008. Mr. Klein is an entrepreneurial executive with over 12 years experience leading marketing, business development, and operations efforts for both start-up and established retail, transportation and technology-oriented companies. Along with a passion for public service, Mr. Klein brings to the position a commitment to quality customer service, a talent for developing innovative transportation solutions, and an entrepreneurial flair born of his experience in the private sector. Klein has proven experience partnering with government and business sectors in the District of Columbia.
He is the co-founder and most recently served as the Chief Executive Officer of On the Fly, an innovative, boutique food-service company with retail, wholesale, catering and events businesses all-in-one. In 2007, Klein and his On the Fly team designed and launched next-generation electric smartkarts, which deliver high quality natural foods to DC residents, workers and visitors in densely trafficked areas. He collaborated with the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA), as well as the Smithsonian museum, local universities and private developers to place smartkarts in locations throughout the city.
From 2002 to 2006, Klein demonstrated his commitment to reducing America’s carbon footprint as regional vice president of Zipcar, where he helped pioneer the concept of carsharing in the United States and built a thriving business model in the District. Within 4 years, membership grew by over 1000 percent and approximately 500 green vehicles were brought to the Washington metropolitan area. As a result, the region achieved profitable operating results. At the end of Klein’s tenure at Zipcar, the city was the nation’s largest carsharing city by membership and vehicles.
His forward-thinking approach initially developed as Director of Stores for Bikes USA, the nation’s largest bicycle retailer, where he spearheaded growth and headed operations for the entire company from 1995 to 1999.
Klein earned a Bachelor of Science in marketing management from Virginia Tech in 1994, and has been a resident of the District of Columbia for 14 years. |
