Artist’s rendering of the Civic Plaza. | The Columbia Heights Public Realm project is the culmination of years of planning by the District Department of Transportation in partnership with Columbia Heights residents and ANCs. This ambitious project, which launches in September of 2008, represents an ambitious effort to implement consistent, practical, and esthetically pleasing urban landscape elements in what can best be described as the heart of the city, Columbia Heights.
The project will be rolled out in two phases. Phase 1 will focus on the area surrounding the intersection of 14th Street and Park Road, NW. The centerpiece of Phase 1 will be completion of a public park featuring a unique fountain/public gathering venue. The plan also calls for reconstruction and paving of roads and sidewalks, and the installation of new lighting and street furniture. Phase 2 of the project will focus on infrastructure and streetscape improvements on 14th Street, NW between Columbia Road and Newton Street, NW.
All of the improvement made as part of this project will be designed and executed in a manner consistent with the grand vision set out in the District's 2007 Public Realm Design Handbook.
