K Street Transitway

The K Street Transitway Study is a study to support the development of a high performance transit link through the central core of the District of Columbia, connecting Union Station and Georgetown, along a preferred alignment for dedicated transit lanes on K Street between Mt.Vernon Square and Washington Circle. The study area* is bound by H Street to the south; M Street to the north; 5th Street to the east and just west of the Key Bridge. The Transitway will operate on the following streets: K Street; Massachusetts Avenue; Wisconsin Avenue; M Street/Canal Road; and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. Consultants completed the final report that outlined alternative configurations along the K Street corridor in May 2005. The report identified three feasible alignments (two median running dedicated transit ways and one curb running bus lane) which were analyzed.

The current design concept considers a center transitway that does not require the construction of a median, but instead is demarcated by a mountable curb with a unique paint scheme. Revised (2008) capital cost estimate based on the fully allocated cost model is $46-49 million for construction of the Transitway.

  • Study Scope

    The Mass Transit Administration is the lead DDOT Administration managing the K Street Transitway Study. The Mass Transit Administration is currently working with DMJM+Harris, the same contractor who developed the original 2005 K Street Transitway Study for DDOT, to complete follow-up tasks for the Study which include:

    • Development of a fully allocated cost model;
    • Development of a funding plan and;
    • Guidance on the appropriate environmental documentation.

    This work is estimated to take approximately six months. Once initiated, the environmental and design processes are estimated to take approximately 12 months. DDOT anticipates that funding sources for this project will be a combination local, FHWA and FTA funds.

    The completed study will include the aforementioned cost model, funding plan and environmental documentation. Upon completion of the study, the Transportation Policy and Planning Administration will lead the environmental documentation process and upon approval by the funding agency (local and federal) the Infrastructure Project Management Administration will complete 30% of the design work and develop an RFP for a design-build for the remaining design and construction. We invite you to review the K Street Report—Executive Summary*.
