| Streetcar Project
The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is committed to reducing congestion and parking problems with innovative transportation options for all residents of the District. Streetcar systems—which many cities around the United States shelved in favor of buses—are making a comeback in major cities. This is in part due to their low emissions and environmentally-friendly features.
DDOT has outlined Streetcar Planning Goals as it works to increase transportation options for residents of the District:
- Link neighborhoods with a modern, convenient and attractive transportation alternative.
- Provide quality service to attract and reach new transit ridership.
- Offer more transit options for District residents.
- Reduce short inner-city auto trips, parking demand, traffic congestion and air pollution.
- Encourage economic development and affordable housing options along the corridor.
