South Capitol Street (Frederick Douglass Memorial) Bridge Alignment Study
The existing Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge on South Capitol Street is one of the most important bridge structures and one of the most widely-used bridges in Washington DC. This bridge is a major crossing over the Anacostia River. This bridge is located on South Capitol Street. The age of the bridge and its heavy use and loading has made the bridge structurally deficient and functionally inefficient. The District Department of Transportation after extensive bridge inspections, testing, and expert opinion has determined that the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge needs to be replaced with a new bridge.
The purpose of this study is to establish the technical constraints of the bridge alignment of the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge on South Capitol Street to enhance the development and consideration of the alternative alignments in the NEPA document. This study will collect data on existing utilities, contaminated soil and hazardous materials, in particular.
