The National Night Out takes place every year on the first Tuesday in August and is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. From community cookouts to open houses to block parties, candlelight vigils and athletic events, neighbors and police officers across the country come together to have a night of safe summer fun. This year’s event will be the 28th annual celebration of the National Night Out and involves citizens, law-enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from 9,500 communities in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide.
The National Night Out is designed to:
Heighten awareness of crime- and drug-prevention initiatives;
Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs;
Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police/community partnerships; and
Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
