Mayor Vincent C. Gray Thanks Safeway Officials for Donation to Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington
$81,500 Donation Result of Proceeds From 19th Annual Safeway Barbecue Battle
(WASHINGTON, DC) – Today, Mayor Vincent C. Gray joined officials from Safeway Inc. as they presented a check for $81,500 to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington. The check represented funds raised as a result of the 19th Annual Safeway Barbecue Battle, held on Pennsylvania Avenue June 24-25.
“The Safeway Barbecue Battle is an event to which barbecue aficionados from across our great country look forward, and I’m glad that the District of Columbia hosts it – and that I get to attend,” said Mayor Gray. “I’m also glad that Safeway continues to be a good corporate citizen of our region by using the Barbecue Battle to help raise funds for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington.”
This year’s Safeway Barbecue Battle drew an estimated attendance of 120,000. CNN Travel has named the event one of “Five Can’t-Miss Summer Festivals in the United States.” In it, barbecue teams from across the country compete for $40,000 in cash and prizes.
In its nearly two decades, the Safeway Barbecue Battle has raised a cumulative $1.3 million for the Boys and Girls Clubs. The organizers look forward to next year’s 20th Annual Safeway Barbecue Battle being bigger and better than ever.
