South Capitol Street Corridor

The South Capitol Street Corridor Project will transform the street from an urban freeway into a boulevard while improving safety, multi-modal transportation mobility and community access that will support economic development.

Purpose:

  • Improve safety
    The design and deteriorating condition of infrastructure in the corridor creates the need for improvements.
  • Improve multimodal mobility
    Roadway connections are missing and facilities for pedestrians, bicyclists are lacking.
  • Improve accessibility
    Grade separations and intersection configurations limit access.
  • Support ongoing economic development
    Development in the area will add jobs.

Key Project Elements:

  • a new arched bascule Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge across the Anacostia River;
  • a new at-grade traffic circle at Suitland Parkway; a reconstructed Suitland Parkway/Interstate 295 interchange; and a new Martin Luther King Jr. and Suitland Parkway interchange east of the river
  • a new at-grade traffic oval connecting South Capitol Street, Potomac Avenue and Q Street SE, a reconstructed South Capitol Street as a six-lane boulevard with an improved streetscape from the oval to Independence Avenue and at-grade M Street SE intersection west of the river.
  • improved bicycle and pedestrian facilities throughout the corridor
