WMATA Governance Reform

WMATA

The District of Columbia, Virginia and Maryland share responsibility for mass transit services operated by the Washington Area Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA). WMATA is governed by a Board of Directors composed of two members and two alternates each from the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia and the federal government.

In November of 2010 a Joint WMATA Governance Task Force (Task Force), sponsored by the Greater Washington Board of Trade (BOT) and the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG), issued Moving Metro Forward: Report of the Joint WMATA Governance Review Task Force External Website. Subsequently, WMATA’s Riders’ Advisory Council (RAC) issued their Report on Governance of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority [PDF] External Website. The District of Columbia, the State of Maryland and the Commonwealth of Virginia welcomed these reports and the Governors of Maryland and Virginia, along with the Mayor of the District of Columbia instructed their transportation department executives to produce an Implementation Plan for WMATA Governance Reform.

The Implementation Plan and Schedule for WMATA Governance Reform, prepared by the Secretary of Transportation for the Commonwealth of Virginia, the Secretary of Transportation for the State of Maryland and the Director of Transportation for the District of Columbia is found below in the Related Documents section.
