DDOT Solicits Ideas for Network of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Media Contact: John Lisle (DDOT) at (202) 671-2004

(Washington, DC) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is soliciting ideas for the design of a system that could drastically alter the way many of us get around town in the not-too-distant future. As you may have heard, DDOT plans to install curbside charging stations to support the introduction and future demand for electric vehicles (EV) in the District. To assist with that effort, DDOT has issued a Request for Information (RFI) on the installation, management, and operation of outdoor curbside EV charging stations.

Information Requested

DDOT is seeking information on the following:

  1. How many chargers should be installed in the District within next 1-5 years on public right of way to support future demand and purchases of electric vehicles in the Washington region?
  2. What methodology should be used to identify and prioritize charging locations?
  3. Please describe how they should best operate and interface with users including where plugs should be located, payment methodology and safety considerations?
  4. Who should maintain, own and operate the chargers?
  5. How should installation be tied in to existing infrastructure and street furniture in order to minimize visual and special footprint?

DDOT intends to use the information from the responses to establish parameters and requirements to be included in a possible future solicitation for offers. Interested parties, please review the RFI for details. The complete Request for Information is posted on the DDOT website.

The deadline to submit information is February 25, 2010.
