(Washington, DC) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) today unveiled the District’s first multi-modal digital transportation display which provides travelers with real-time information about their transportation choices on one screen. DDOT Director Gabe Klein and the department’s Chief Technology Officer Lance Schine demonstrated the technology at the busy intersection of 14th and U Streets, NW where the first pilot screen is installed in the ground floor window of the Reeves Center.

“We are already planning to install NextBus displays in bus shelters across the city, but this pilot demonstrates how a more robust platform with state-of-the-art technology can empower travelers with even more information in-place where they need it,” said DDOT Director Gabe Klein. “Multiple transportation options are layered on this one dynamic display – not just buses, but Metrorail, bikesharing and carsharing as well.”

The multi-modal display at 14th and U currently displays:

  • Bus Schedules for Metrobus lines 52, 53, 54, 90, 92, 93, 96 and X3 (Real-time arrival predictions will be introduced within 60 days)
  • Bus arrival predictions for the DC Circulator (Woodley Park - Adams Morgan - McPherson Square route
  • Metrorail arrival predictions at U Street/African-American Civil War Memorial/Cardozo station (Green and Yellow lines)
  • Capital Bikeshare – number of available bikes and open docks at these nearby stations:
    • 14th & V St NW
    • 16th & U St NW
    • 14th & R St NW
  • Carsharing – number of cars available at:
    • 14th/U St NW – On Street
    • 13th/U St NW at The Ellington
    • U St Metro at 13th/T St NW

The various transportation options and their locations are also displayed on a map of the area. In addition the screen displays the current time, day, date and weather conditions, and has a ticker for news and transportation alerts. A video sample of the display can be viewed at www.YouTube.com/DDOTvideos External Website.

DDOT is planning to expand the pilot in the coming months by installing dual-sided 32” screens in 3 additional locations and/or bus shelters, and is also exploring the use of TIGER funds for a large scale deployment of the technology next year.
